A cargo vessel sank off the coast shortly after midnight Friday in what officials are calling an unusual and still-unexplained incident. Local fishermen observing the ship through binoculars reported that it went under in less than a minute.
No distress call was received from the vessel. Coast Guard radio contact could not be established either before or after the sinking. Rescue crews were dispatched to the waters off Blackmoor Cove but have not yet located wreckage or survivors.
Approximately five hours after the ship went down, Blackmoor Cove experienced seismic activity strong enough to damage several buildings around town. Seismologists have not commented on any possible connection between the two events.
NEWS 6 aired a special emergency broadcast covering both developments as they happened.
